Computer Cleaning Guide
How To Clean Computers

Keeping a computer clean is not only important for it to look good but to keep internal functions, such as those in the tower and CPU working properly as well. Dust and radicals from the environment settle into the crevices of your computer and can be harmful in the long run.

How To Clean Your Computer

The Mouse - Cleaning the mouse regularly is important, especially to keep it bacteria free since you are touching it so much, especially if others use the mouse as well. Use a computer cleaning solution or any household mild cleaner and lint free cloth to clean to wipe it once a week or so. Using an anti bacterial cleaner is also a good idea.

Keyboard – Like the mouse the keyboard can be a germ fest and gets dirty much quicker than any other computer component. Dust, crumbs and other stuff settles between the keys and turns to gunk and makes the keyboard look awful and eventually all that dirt will make the keys sticky. If you keep it up your keyboard will last a lot longer and look great as well.

Make sure to turn off the computer before cleaning the keyboard. First pick up the keyboard and gently shake it, this will get rid off all the gunk that is not stuck to the keys. You can also buy a can of compressed air and spray all the loose dust out. Then, either buy a computer cleaning solution or use any type of mild household cleanser.

The best tool with which to clean your computer keyboard is an old toothbrush, it gets into all the cracks and crevices and has scrubbing power. Be careful with the cleaner, never spray it directly on the keyboard, instead wet the bristles of the brush and gently scrub in between keys and flat areas.

Tower and CPU – The main tower that houses the CPU can easily get very dusty in the back where the peripheral and component ports are. Use the compressed air to thoroughly spray the dust away. It’s a good idea to either do this outside or away from other stuff and carpet, as the dust will fly everywhere. After spraying if you still see dust then use a link free cloth with some gently cleanser sprayed on and wipe between crevices any remaining dirt or dust. Make sure to get the fan area really clean because too much dust in that fan can cause the computer to overheat.

Monitor – Many people neglect their monitors and have no idea how the dust layers affect the eyes and view of the screen. If you have an LCD monitor then you have to take great care with cleaning. Use a very soft cotton cloth to wipe away dust, and an LCD cleaning solution or an equal mixture of water and isopropyl alcohol for a deep clean. Be really careful with LCD screens as you can damage it quite easily, and never spray anything directly on the screen.

If you have a CRT monitor, then just use a wet cloth, or spray some Windex on it and to clean it thoroughly. Also make sure to wipe the housing of the monitor, as they can get quite grimy from dust that settles deep on it.
