What is a Computer Modem

Modem (from modulator-demodulator) is a device that modulates an analog signal to encode digital information, and also demodulates such a carrier signal to decode the transmitted information. A modem is a device that converts the digital signals produced by terminals and computers into the analog signals that telephone circuits are designed to carry. A computer modem is a sort of a dialer for Internet access.

The modem turns the digital 1’s and 0’s computer programming language into sounds that can be transmitted over the telephonecomputer-modem lines and once they are received on the other side, converts those 1s and 0s back into a form used by a USB, Ethernet, serial, or network connection.
Modems are generally classified by the amount of data they can send in a given time, normally measured in bits per second, or "bps". They can also be classified by Baud, the number of times the modem changes its signal state per second.

Some computers have internal modems, while other are external components that are plugged into the computer via an Ethernet port.

3 Types of Modems

Dial Up – Old school and slowest connection speed for access to the Internet.

DSL – Second fastest connection speed.

High-speed cable Internet – The fastest connection modem speed which makes for  downloading and loading of Internet pages the fastest of all other types of services.
